Visual Arts: The alter-ego

In this lesson I introduced the topic of alter ego’s to the class. As a group we firstly discussed what an alter ego or could be. We found that there isn’t one definition of the word, however it seemed like everyone in the group understood the main idea as everyone was participating in the discussion.
Then I gave them the challenge of creating their own alter ego’. I guided the learners in the process of choosing key traits that their alter egos would have. The learners were also required to embody their alter egos throughout the remainder of the lesson.

The main objective of this exercise was focused on building one’s self confidence and self-awareness whilst considering the next person by embodying a different character.
The exercse also allowed the class to explore other methods of self expression since their alter ego’s had to be distinct or future versions of themselves.
The most important part of the lesson was showing them that the person they created is the exact same person that they are.
